Quote of the Week – Eliot Coleman

“A farm is a manipulative creature. There is no such thing as finished. Work comes in a stream and has no end. There are only the things that must be done now and things that can be done later.”

8 October 2016 – Farm Diary

We got our first lemon!  It’s very yummy and there are several more that are almost ready.  The lime tree has fruit on it as well, but they are a little farther behind.

Weather continues to cool off.  Dixie is enjoying hanging out in front of the stove.  Sara thinks she likes the heat; I think she just likes to watch ‘the flicker’.

We’re still getting more rain, which is good but also makes for a muddy mess.  Spent some time working on covering the final irrigation pipes and got totally covered in mud.  Driving off the gravel is a total no go unless we want to leave big ruts.  Fortunately, there’s not a whole lot of driving that we need to be doing, as the primary activity now is preparing for winter weather.

1 October 2016 – Farm Diary

Took a weekend off farm work for a family visit.  Dad brought us a card – group assembly required.

Weather is definitely turning ‘fall-ish’.  Getting regular rain and cool temperatures; the plants sure appear to be appreciating it.  No hard freezes yet, although I’ve brought the sensitive plants in a couple times when we’ve gotten close.

Time to start cleaning everything up on the farm, draining irrigation, putting hoses away, getting materials covered/stored, etc!

Quote of the Week – Aldo Leopold

“There are two spiritual dangers in not owning a farm. One is the danger of supposing that breakfast comes from the grocery, and the other that heat comes from the furnace.”
